Why Botox Can Be Beneficial

The toxin onobotulinumtoxinA is used in Botox injections to temporarily prevent the movement of targeted muscles. Botox is the first drug to use the toxin botulinum, which is produced by a microbe responsible for botulism. The injections are capable of blocking some chemical signals that cause the contraction of our muscles. The injections temporarily relax the muscles allowing for the treatment of certain body functions.

Here at Dermatology Associates PC, in our Batesville, IN, Tipton, IN, and Indianapolis, IN, office, Botox injections are the most popular procedures Dr. Sonya Campbell offers. Find out why below.

Botox for Treating Wrinkles

The treatment of facial wrinkles, as well as frown lines using Botox, requires injecting the substance directly into the face. This results in the alleviation of stress and aging signs. The original purpose of Botox was to treat patients experiencing eyelid spasms. However, doctors discovered that the wrinkles began to improve as the treatment progressed.

The aesthetic medicine industry uses Botox to introduce a purified protein into the muscles that can eliminate wrinkles by reducing the contractions. The protein paralyzes the muscles into a relaxed state to allow the muscle as well as the skin to flatten and smoothen out. This results in younger-looking and wrinkle-free skin.

Botox treatment results can last for about four to six months on average. But, with several treatments, accumulative effects can be experienced by some patients. This allows the results to last anywhere from eight to 10 months, or in some cases, even longer.

Botox Injections for Treating Hyperhidrosis

The condition of hyperhidrosis or excessive sweating of the palms and the underarms can also be treated with Botox. This is made possible by blocking the nerve actions responsible for supplying the sweat glands and stopping them from producing sweat. Many patients rely on this treatment because they have tried almost everything from strong antiperspirants to medication but still struggle with the problem of hyperhidrosis.

Botox effectively stops actual sweating and is likewise capable of reducing body odor. Only a small amount of botulinum toxin is needed in the Botox injection to inhibit the sympathetic nervous system responsible for controlling the activity of the sweat glands. Acetylcholine, which is responsible for overstimulating the sweat glands in the feet, hands, face, and underarms is effectively inhibited. This is achieved with a Botox injection that is completed in roughly 15 minutes.

Patients can expect to experience the results within a few days after the procedure in our Batesville, IN, Tipton, IN, or Indianapolis, IN, office. Since Botox is a relatively simple and painless process, there is no need to administer anesthesia. There are, however, options to have topical numbing agents applied to the area to be injected should the patient choose to do so.

Take note though that Botox injection for hyperhidrosis is not a cure. It merely offers relief from the condition. Patients can experience freedom from excessive sweating for seven months on average. There are cases though in which patients reported relief from hyperhidrosis for up to a year after treatment.
