Botox® is used to treat Focal Hyperhidrosis of the:
- Underarms
- Hands
- Feet
- Face
- Scalp
There are two types of hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), focal or generalized.
Focal hyperhidrosis involves one or more of the areas-underarms, hands, feet, face, and scalp.
Generalized hyperhidrosis, also known as secondary hyperhidrosis is actually caused by other underlying condition(s) such as endocrine disorders, menopause, obesity, nerve damage, and medications.
Botox® has been FDA approved for treatment of underarm (focal) hyperhidrosis. Regardless of the area in the focal hyperhidrosis category, Botox® can be used to control excessive sweating. The purified protein is injected in the desired area, causing an interruption of the signal of the nerve to the sweat glands. The result is the elimination or diminishing of sweat production. This treatment does not interfere with the body’s internal system for temperature regulation.
The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes with results of muscle relaxation lasting up to 3-6 months.

Since no sedation or local anesthesia is necessary, one can resume regular activity immediately after treatment.
When will I notice the difference and how long will it last?
Once treated, the affects may take three to seven days to become fully noticeable. The results may last from 3-6 months. Often, repeated treatments can lead to longer lasting results. Results vary among individuals and treated area.
What happens as treatment begins to wear off?
As Botox® begins to wear off one notice an increase noticeable sweating. To maintain the affects, it requires three to four injections per year. With repeated treatments, the effects of Botox® tend to last longer, thus requiring fewer injections.
