Common Signs of Aging Skin: Wrinkles, Fine Lines, and Texture Changes

Looking Good Feeling Great in Indiana

It is a fact of life that your skin changes as you age; how you take care of your skin when you are younger determines how your skin looks as you age.

Dr. Sonya Campbell Johnson, a board-certified dermatologist, and her excellently trained staff of Dermatology Associates located in Tipton, Batesville & Indianapolis, IN, look forward to your appointment to discuss your aging skin needs.

How Your Skin Ages

When you are born, your skin is elastic, dewy, and collagen-rich. Environmental and chemical changes within your body cause your skin to lose elasticity. Fine lines, wrinkles, and texture changes become increasingly noticeable over the years as aging progresses. These skin changes can be due in large part to sun exposure and smoking.

Sun damage to the top layer of skin causes the skin to become thin and develop pigmentation changes or "age spots." Collagen production in your body gradually decreases as you age, so wrinkles or fine lines form from a lack of collagen.

Smoking for extended periods also slows down the production of your skin's collagen. Wrinkles and fine lines can form anywhere on the face, hands, legs, neck, and arms.

Signs of Aging

You may not notice the signs of aging in your skin, but the medical staff at Dermatology Associates located in Tipton, Batesville & Indianapolis, IN, explain the signs/symptoms of aging skin.

  • Loose, "droopy" skin
  • Age spots/sun exposure
  • Overall dryness/dry spots on certain parts of the body
  • "Laugh lines" from repetitive facial motions
  • Hyperpigmentation/chest area
  • Hair loss/changing hair color

Treatment of Skin Damage

Recognizing that your skin isn't as youthful and firm as when you were younger is the first step in repairing your skin damage. Covering your skin with clothing and sunscreen whenever you go outside aids in protecting your skin from the sun.

Add increased fruits and vegetables to your daily diet to maintain youthful skin. Avoiding/cutting back on alcohol consumption keeps your body and skin hydrated with less damage to cells. Getting a full night's sleep and avoiding stressful situations affects how your skin ages.

You and our doctor create a plan of what skincare products and procedures your skin will benefit from, such as microdermabrasion for smoother skin, chemical peels to smooth texture and create glowing skin, Botox injections for wrinkles, dermal fillers to restore a youthful appearance, and the Pearl fractional laser to reduce wrinkles and fine lines.
