Restylane™ and Juvéderm are non-animal, biodegradable gels created from a natural substance called hyaluronic acid.  The gel is injected into the skin in small amounts with a fine needle.  The product adds volume and helps diminish fine lines and wrinkles.  Both products are made of a natural substance normally found in our body.  The results are instant and produce natural enhancements that are gentle and safe to your skin.  These products are good to give the lip a fuller look, define the lip borders, or fill in the wrinkles around the lip or other desirable areas.

Treatments take approximately 15 to 30 minutes.  Since anesthesia is not necessary, recovery time is minimal and most clients return to normal activities immediately.  The results last from 4-5 months with Restylane™ and up to 6 months with Juvéderm.

Radiesse® is an opaque, biodegradable product composed of calcium hydroxylapatite in an aqueous gel carrier.  After anesthesia, a small amount of the product is injected in the desired areas to add volume and help in augmentation and facial contouring. Calcium hydroxylapitite is found in nature as the mineral component of human bone.  Synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse®) shares the same biocompatibility profile of the natural compound.   No skin testing is necessary and there is no migration or ossification of the product.  The results are instant and long lasting.  Profound affects occur when this product is used for soft tissue augmentation and contouring of the face to produce a youthful appearance.

Treatments take approximately 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the desired area of treatment.  Recovery time is minimal and most clients return to normal activities immediately.  The result lasts 12 to 18 months.

Common Questions about Dermal Fillers

What is Restylane™, Juvéderm and Radiesse®?

All three are dermal fillers, products that provide volume with resulting eliminating or diminishing of wrinkles and depressed areas.  Restylane™ and Juvéderm are composed of synthetic hyaluronic acid.  Hyaluronic acid is a natural substance that is produced naturally by the human body.  It provides volume to the skin, lubricates the joints and gives the eyes their shape.

Radiesse® is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in an aqueous carboxymethlcellulose gel carrier.  Calcium hydroxylapatite is the mineral component of human bone, however synthetic calcium hydroxylapatite does not cause bone formation.

How does it work?

Dermal fillers work by temporary adding volume to the tissues.  The effects last up to 4 months for Restylane™, 6 months for Juvéderm, and 12 to 18 months for Radiesse®.  Restylane™ and Juvéderm maintains it shape by using the body’s own moisture.  The hyaluronic acid attracts water.  As it gradually degrades, each molecule binds to water and over time, the same volume can be maintained with less hyaluronic acid.

Radiesse® is calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a gel consisting of glycerin, sterile water, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose.   The gel is broken down by the body over 4-12 weeks.  The microspheres, which do not migrate or calcify, act as a scaffold that promotes soft tissue formation.  Thus the microspheres and soft tissue become integrated in the surrounding soft tissue, which provides for a longer affect.  Over time the calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres are broken down by the body into calcium and phosphate ions.

How is treatment performed?

Dermal fillers are injected with a small needle.  Small amounts of the products are injected into the skin to provide volume restoration.  Radiesse® is injected deeper then Restylane™ or Juvéderm, therefore anesthesia is administered prior to injection.  Once Radiesse® is injected the areas are massaged and molded into the desired appearance.

How long will my treatment take?

Treatment with Restylane™ is very quick and easy.  It will take approximately 15 to 30 minutes to perform.  Radiesse® will take longer because it requires anesthesia prior to correction.  It will normally take 30 to 45 minutes.  Injection with dermal fillers has various times for treatments because it depends on the correction you wish to have performed.

What will be accomplished?

Dermal fillers add volume.  All smooth out the deep wrinkles that are present when the facial muscles are at complete rest.  Patients generally need one injection to achieve optimal wrinkle smoothing, whereas one-third of patients needed more than one injection to get a satisfactory result.

Radiesse® restores a more youthful anatomic feature through cheek augmentation and facial contouring, ameliorating deep wrinkles, or correcting asymmetric defects. Once injected with Radiesse®, patients return in one week, once the swelling subsides to massage any areas.  Patients return in 2 to 3 months to provide touch-up injections as necessary.

How soon before I see results?

Results are apparent immediately.

Can dermal fillers be removed?

Restylane™ and Juvéderm cannot be removed once place. If visible, some of the Radiesse® product can be removed.  All of the products dissolve naturally with time.

How long will dermal fillers last?

All products dissolve naturally over time and are absorbed by your body.  Results will depend on several factors such as: your skin’s structure, your lifestyle, and your age.  Touch-up and follow-up treatments will add to the duration.

Does Restylane™ get stiffer in cold weather?  What happens in the sun?

You should not expose the treated are to intense heat or extreme cold for the first few days after treatment in order to avoid the risk of inflammation since the area has been disrupted.  Once Restylane™ has been integrated into the body; it will adjust to your normal body temperature.

Are there any potential side effects?

Potential side affects may include:  bruising, redness, swelling, pain, tenderness, itching, and pinpoint bleeding.  Patients who take blood thinners may experience more bruising and swelling after Radiesse® treatment.  Application of ice over the injection areas after Radiesse® treatments reduce and limit tissue edema.

When should it not be used?

Dermal fillers should not be used in patients who have allergies to the products used.
