Our skilled medical doctor is board-certified in dermatology and experienced in many skin conditions and skin-related surgical procedures. We are experts at performing Mohs surgery.

What is Mohs Surgery?

Mohs surgery is an exact, precise surgical procedure performed under a microscope. This procedure removes cancerous tissue without damaging any healthy tissue in the surgical area. The doctor removes each layer of the tumor, one layer at a time, thus ensuring complete removal of the cancerous area.

After each layer of the tumor is removed, the doctor examines it under a microscope for cancerous cells. The doctor repeats these steps until they see no further evidence of cancer.

Benefits of this Procedure

Our doctor can spare areas of healthy tissue with minimal scar formation. This surgery is an excellent option for carcinoma of the ear, scalp, feet, hands, genitals, and face. The types of cancer that respond well to this procedure include,

  • Basal Cell
  • Squamous Cell
  • Certain Melanomas
  • Dermatofibroscarcoma Protuberans
  • Microcystic Adnexal Carcinoma
  • Sebaceous
  • Extramammary
  • Paget Disease

Dr. Sonya Campbell Johnson at Dermatology Associates in Tipton, Batesville, and Indianapolis IN, explains that after removing each tumor layer using the Mohs procedure, you can rest in the waiting room while the doctor examines the specimen.

If the team sees cancer cells, the doctor will call you back for another layer of removal until no cancer cells are detected. While this procedure is not quick, it is exact. It is more important to ensure the surgeon can remove all cancerous cells.

This procedure is pain-free, performed under local anesthesia. However, you may have slight to moderate pain following this procedure, and we will help you manage any discomfort.
